Hayatı

İtalyan ressam olan Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaccio, adını Milano'ya yakın Caravaccio şehrinden almıştır. O dönemde hakim olan Maniyerizm'in kurallarından kopan Caravaccio, resim alanında Barok temellerini atmıştır. Resimde koyu fon üzerine ışıklandırılmış figürlerin dramatik etkisi dönemin yeni tekniği olmuştur.

Caravaccio'nun yaptığı büyük resimlerde dramatizm hakim olup, küçük resim ve portrelerde huzur gözlenmektedir. Geleneksel ideal yüzleri redederek kendine model olarak halktan figür ve yüzleri seçer. Deri, kırışıklar ve kumaş çeşitlerini fotoğraf gerçekçiliği ile resimlerinde yansıtmıştır.
